'Ahem!'
This is a sound made when one is trying to suppress a cough, when one has sore throat or when one wants other people to know of his presence.
The last type is called the territorial cough. Where do you often hear it? Yes! It is commonly heard in public toilets. When you are inside a cubicle and you hear someone outside, you make the territorial cough to let the other person know that the cubicle is occupied. It gives you a sense of security that your privacy will not be invaded.
In other areas of our life we also have different versions of the territorial cough. Here are some examples. At work, if you are holding a position of importance, you do the territorial cough in different forms like walking with your chin up, dressing better than the rest, showing a little 'bossy-ness' and acting with confidence. These things help you 'remind' others of the position you are holding.
In the community, those who belong to the 'upper class' also exhibit the territorial cough in various forms. Some would always make it a point to be well-dressed (again better than others) in public. Others would make a way to let other people know how much they spent for this or that car or for this or that party. Still others would give generous donations in church or charity events. Doing these things secures their spot in the community.
You, what's your territorial cough?
